Summer in Le Grand Bornand

Summer in Chinaillon is breathtakingly beautiful!  If you like being outdoors nothing can beat it.  On the doorstep are the most serenely beautiful walks, exhilarating mountain bike trails.  All around you is the blue sky and the mountain peaks and often nothing but the sound of cow bells (there are reportedly more cows than humans in the Grand Bornand valley, which is the main producer of Reblochon cheese and is also known as the capital of “Cow Art”).  Le Grand Bornand is just 25 minutes away from Lake Annecy, reportedly the cleanest lake in Europe.  It's very beautiful old town is described as the "Venice of the Alps" with its network of canals and beautiful old buildings.

The villages of Le Grand Bornand, Chinaillon, and La Clusaz , host a number of events during the summer including an International Hot Air Balloon Festival, the Fete d'Alpage (located opposite the chalet) this is the summer pastures fete which celebrates traditional mountain pastimes.  La Clusaz hosts the annual Fete de Reblochon,  a festival dedicated to lovers of the local dish "Tartiflete" - a combination of bacon, potatoes, cream and Reblochon cheese.  Details available at the Tourist Office.

The Tour de France

Le Grand Bornand is a regular stop/pass through on The Tour  (most recently 2004 and 2007, 2009, 2013, 2018) at the end of one of the most gruelling stages of the Tour de France route.   The route down from the Col de Colombiere goes straight past the chalet.

Annecy is probably the most beautiful Alpine city in Europe, and is situated at one end of a crystal clear lake.  Built on a network of canals, Annecy is sometime referred to as the Venice of the Alps. The old city, which is mostly car-free, is breathtakingly beautiful and has a lot of interesting shops, restaurants and covered walkways.  On Sundays it hosts an enormous street market.  Be warned that Annecy can get very busy in August and the traffic can be appalling!

The lake stretches for many miles and is a mecca for water sports in the area.  From sailing, windsurfing, water skiing and wake boarding to the more leisurely pedalos.  It is possible in many ways to enjoy the clear waters of what is reputedly the cleanest lake in Europe.  There are many public beaches where you can swim in the surprisingly warm water!  Talloires is a pretty lakeside town, and is one of the closest to Le Grand Bornand.

There are also boat tours around the lake as well as a series of water-buses that leave from right by the old city and take you to the villages around the lake.
